A quick thought on fear

I know this is the second “thought” post in quick succession, but while falling asleep last night I remembered something from my childhood: I could never sleep in the dark. My mind would fill it with all manner of things. The light in the hallway in front of my room would need to stay on.Continue reading “A quick thought on fear”

Free as a bird?

We all know this popular turn of phrase. It seems to come so naturally. Is there anything freer than a bird? How amazing must it be not to have these challenges, obligations, emotions? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could just spread our wings and fly away, our earthly tethers removed?

A quick thought on where we are right now

You’d be forgiven for thinking we’ve hit rock bottom only to break out the shovels. After 9/11, the world lost its mind. Rights curtailed, industries overhauled, countries invaded. Now, Covid-19 causes one 9/11 a day in deaths, in the US alone, yet here we are. On top of that, there is societal division, mounting US-ChinaContinue reading “A quick thought on where we are right now”

A quick thought on the death penalty

Essentialism vs Minimalism

There are many ways to live, and for us, we love to keep it simple. Micah and I try to be essentialists. This means we do not own anything that we do not need. Everything has a specific purpose. Nothing in our closets, bags or storage areas is there because “we may need it atContinue reading “Essentialism vs Minimalism”

How to live slow and have a more meaningful life

Increasingly, I feel like a character from a Disney movie in the 1940s, living in a small wooden cabin under a green canopy, getting food from the plants outside, and doing chores in a ridiculous old-fashioned way (yes, we air-dry our clothes on a clothes line with pins), with a soundtrack of birdsong in theContinue reading “How to live slow and have a more meaningful life”

Who do you kill?

On SaaniaSparkle’s blog, I read about the infamous trolly problem again. If you have not heard of it before, it goes something like this: A train races towards a group of five people who are stuck in the train’s path. You can decide to pull a lever and change the train’s path, but then youContinue reading “Who do you kill?”

Bad decisions.

I picked up the tiny cat again today. Granted, she is not as tiny as she used to be. Especially in the ‘roundness’ department. And she proves it regularly by rolling around the house, discovering new hiding places. Her main nemesis, meanwhile, is me, who enjoys picking her up and putting her down somewhere else,Continue reading “Bad decisions.”
