What I eat in a day – healthy or naughty?

I love food. I am like Winnie The Pooh in this regard. If I am not eating it, I am thinking about it. Sharing food also gives me a lot of joy. Today, I thought I would share what I usually eat in a day – just simple homecooked meals from our small kitchen.

Breakfast

I like crepes and granola with fruit and yogurt, but lately, breakfast is a lot of bread since my youngest sister taught me how to bake bread. The Philippines is not known for its bread culture, unlike in Germany where access to good bread is a birthright.

In fact, you will be hard-pressed here to find bread with a crust or anything that does not contain sugar. Yes, even pandesal has sweet tones to it. I am still practicing my bread making skills but already it is infinitely nicer to have crispy, yeasty home-baked bread.

Lunch

We are in the thick of summer. It is so warm that anything other than a light lunch is impossible to eat. Because we have a tomato harvest, I often cook a fragrant 10-minute garden pasta. Another favorite is my banana blossoms vegetarian sandwich that has gone to the next level with the addition of home-baked bread.

I normally have my fruit with lunch, too. Sometimes it is just straightforward fruit but I also enjoy making my three ingredient mango frozen yogurt, especially because luscious mangoes are currently in season.

Dinner

I eat rice for dinner because I am Asian. It is so comforting and the following food coma helps with a good night’s sleep.

I have tofu in a slew of creative preparations, sometimes seafood caught by the small boats of the fishermen in our community (I can eat wild, sustainably caught seafood) and even cheesy nachos when I feel like snack for dinner because why not?

Dessert is always a treat – cakes, cookies, and all sorts of nice things. I am particularly in love with egg tarts, even if they take sometime to make, and some mornings I even eat a few for breakfast!

What do you usually eat in a day?

  3. Your meals are spectacular!!!! They are so colourful & balanced …. and there is always something sweet!

I bake most of my bread as well because I like a very particular sort of bread which is not always easy, or affordable to get.

    1. Making bread is super nice, therapeutic isn’t it? Very calming. Plus you can eat it. Nice bread is not readily accessible in Sg? And thanks, I find pleasure in food, anything food gives me joy.

      1. We have lots of bakeries & cafes now. Except the prices are just so high for the things I like … walnut bread, sourdough loaves. There are also breads I love, like bagels & challah, which I prefer homebaked – so I can make them exactly the way I like!
What sorts of bread are you making these days?

        1. Ah yes, I understand. Your enumeration of breads made me hungry. I just make ciabatta and everyday loaf. My sister is able to do all sorts of things – she is fantastic!

            1. Yes, but it is not too bad since it just sits there and you go on with your day and come back to it when the alarm rings. I want to make focaccia next. My sister does it so well.

                    1. It was much much easier than I had previously thought. Very tasty (I used a sourdough recipe) but I think for the next batch I need to increase hydration to get better holes in the crumb.

Incidentally, my ciabatta batch #2 was much better. Still not quite there yet … we persist on!

  4. I read your post while feeling a bit hungry, saw “food coma” associated with rice, and brought out my rice cooker. A half hour later I was eating delicious Jasmine rice. I slept like a baby! (My dogs enjoyed a dollop as well!)

  5. Oh, this made me so hungry! I have to say that I am sooo jealous of you having a “mango season”… Here in Belgium we mostly have potatoes (which I love but it’s not a great in frozen yogurt) 😂! As for my usual meals, I typically have oatmeal or toast in the morning, pasta for lunch and something lighter with proteins in the evening – I try to eat more fruit (fresh mangoes would help ahah) but I really struggle with not finishing my meals with “something sweet” like a piece of chocolate or cake…

      1. I don’t like Indian food! HAHA! Unfortunately there are no Pinoy food here on the island. We only eat what is served in the canteen. Can’t be choosy.

  6. I don’t have a typical day of food. I drink the same things just about every day: coffee in the morning, tea with lunch, water in the afternoon, then a beer or a glass of wine before dinner. But as for foods, it’s anyone’s guess what I’ll be eating for a meal.

  7. I switched to wholegrain bread, rice and pasta…and in moderation. I know how appealing carbs are but minimizing them and making raw veggies the bulk of one’s diet pays immense dividends

  8. Your meals are very photogenic. How marvelous to eat such good things, beautifully presented! Your breads are particularly appealing to me.

We often have cereal or something with eggs for breakfast. My favorite is copied from MacDonald’s — egg, cheese, bacon or sausage on an English muffin. Our main meal is in the early afternoon, and we usually have something with plenty of protein (chicken, beef, pork, fish, seafood) and a vegetable. When it gets really warm here, we often have fruit instead of a vegetable. In the evening we have a snack of cheese and crackers or a lettuce salad, followed by cookies for dessert.

    1. Thanks, Anne. It must be the light. And thanks for supporting my breadmaking. I have an incredibly long way to go but I am enjoying it. Your diet sounds good to me, very easygoing, and your family is lucky because you cook for them. Oh, also the cold dinner gives me German feels. At first, I was very confused why they seem to be eating breakfast for dinner but now I get it.

        1. Waffles are always a good idea. I think it is fun to just surprise our bellies sometimes. Catch it offguard when it expects certain things. Haha. We also like having snacls for dinner sometines. Nachos and chippies like that.

      1. Yes. I put oats and hemp seeds in my smoothie so it’s very filling. When I used to eat toast for breakfast I was starving half way through the morning.

My favourite soup is homemade bean and bacon chowder. For canned soup, I like minestrone or tomato parmesan.

        1. Oh, your smoothies sound really tasty. In Bali, smoothie bowls were very trendy, at least pre-pandemic when I was last there. I think my problem with smoothies is I will drink too much! And I prefer to eat my calories. Haha!

    1. Dear Markus + Micah,

Indeed, you are spoilt with food. Many dishes are so enticing that were it not for my strong will to curb my food desire and sweet tooth, I would have stopped remaining slim and become a big fat pink elephant long ago . . . . .

I also appreciate the delight that you have experienced from cooking and savouring healthful dishes. I concur with Michelle, because all of these photos and writing about food here on your blog are making me very hungry and teasing my appetite! Ohhh! May sumptuous meals or exquisite cuisines….come to me right now!

In the spirit of your excellent post and your culinary skill, I would like to offer you some tempting and mind-bogglingly presented food in one of my posts entitled “SoundEagle in Edible Art, Glorious Food and Festive Season” published at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2012/12/08/soundeagle-in-edible-art-glorious-food-and-festive-season/

Happy May to you and Michelle!

      1. Thank you. I do not think I have a strong will when it comes to resisting food. I do not see the point. I want food to give me pleasure and so I allow myself to indulge until I am full. This is probably the main reason why I am motivated to exercise every day. Haha!

  9. Wow! Your meals look so nice!!!! We’ve had a batch of tomatoes grow in our garden too and we’ve been using them in all our meals. Though our garden tomatoes are smaller than those we get from the market.
My eating depends on how lazy I am that day. 🙈 With my city back in a lockdown – I’ve been too demotivated and lazy to cook and have been relying a lot on junk and ready to eat food. 🙈 I usually make oat pancakes for Sunday brunch but was so lazy today that ended up making ready to eat pancakes for my mum. 🙈

    1. Oh yes, how are you coping and is it really bad there? I feel like convenience food has its place in the world. I actually enjoy spicy Korean noodles, too. Super nice to know you have a tomato harvest. Nothing like eating your own food. I feel super proud when I eat mushrooms we grew. It is not like I did a lot, I just mist the substrate occasionally, but I feel like I achieved something every time it fruits.

  10. Micah, super mouth-watering!! And yes to fruits, they do help with the Philippine heat… do you guys eat the same food? Like has he been eating rice too? (I only ask because my husband and I are both Pinoys however eating extremely different food daily)

    1. Thanks! Maybe it is the natural light that makes the food photos look nice. Yes, same. Unfortunately, I do not cook or eat Filipino food. Anything I make is fair game. Just that Markus only eats fish and no other seafood. What do you like to eat and what does your husband eat?

      1. Fish is good. I can never say no to fish ❤ Your style is great, it keeps both your palates satisfied…
His meals are always the spiciest version of everything.. and he loves lamb and cooks a lot of Indian cuisines, whereas my taste is very limited to Pinoy dishes.

        1. We are lucky to be so close to the sea. Seafood is always good. Where does fish in KSA come from? Oh, I also like Indian and spicy food! Markus cannot eat spicy food though. He gets hiccups.

          1. Riyadh gets it from cities nearby like Dammam and Jubail…
I think most people especially the millennials like variety of dishes. I think it’s I who don’t adapt well…

Hiccups? That’s interesting. And very cute….

  11. I don’t have a typical day. Today I had a mole quesadilla (regular quesadilla with mole sauce) and some nachos. Tomorrow I will finish the nachos.

What’s in the first pic… mango with cream? Papaya??

Where can I find your yogurt & mango frogurt recipes?!? I’d really like to try making my own yogurt!

    1. Oh, I want to try real mole from Mexico. I fantasize about that trip a lot. Did you know that nachos, burritos, and hard taco shells are not Mexican? And on that photo is yogurt and mangoes. I will write you my yogurt and frozen yogurt recipes!

      1. Yay for recipes!
And, yeah, being so close to Mexico (roughly 100 miles), I know most of our stuff is not Mexican. Just like how we “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo, but Mexico doesn’t.
I get packaged mole sauce. I don’t know if I’ve ever had it from scratch.

        1. Recipes are on the way! For me, it was mindblowing to know the Mexican food most of the world knows is actually American. Crazy. I would like to visit Mexico one day to learn more about its food.

              1. I doubt I’ll visit because it’s not safe for me to go alone and I don’t have anyone to go with. But Santa Ana, which is near me, is largely latinx so I could just go to their downtown and get authentic Mexican food.
