Because it is time for another Q&A! These questions are from Joana and Amy who both nominated us for the Liebster Award. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity towards our blog, girls. Where would you want to be right now?

Markus: Southwest of France, by the coast of the Atlantic. I’ve been camping there a lot in the past and can’t wait to go there with Micah. Hopefully soon.

Micah: I would very much like to be sat on the counter of this small family-owned noodle shop in Ubud called You&Mie and slurping a steaming bowl of veg ramen.

We eat here everyday whenever we are in town. It is not chicken soup but it is definitely good for the soul.

Take note of the shop – you do not want to miss it in Bali.

What is one thing that you are afraid to write about?

Markus: I’m mainly afraid of being wrong on the internet.

Micah: Math.

Who is your favorite blogger/vlogger right now?

Markus: If you like eccentric British guys, Lindybeige will be right up your alley. He knows a lot and likes to talk, mostly about history, specializing in sometimes hour-long videos without so much as a single cut.

Micah: I watch Planterina on YouTube.

German mashed potatoes in India. The face is a lie, it was tasty!

What is the last thing you ate?

Markus: Casserole with potatoes and brussels sprouts. Used to have it with ham, but even without meat it is extremely tasty.

Micah: I ate a couple of packets of peanuts with my sister while watching Chef’s Table BBQ Episode 2 featuring Lennox Hastie – what an impressive guy.

Pineapples on pizza. Yes or no? (there’s only one right answer).

Markus + Micah: Yes, obviously.

What is your favorite book and why?

Markus: Currently, Life 3.0 by Mark Tegmark. Few things are so seemingly surreal yet acutely relevant as artificial intelligence.

Micah: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I kind of like it crazy.

What is your favorite movie and why?

Markus: In Bruges by Martin McDonagh. It is the only film I know that manages to be a tragedy and a comedy at the same time. Also, it deals with death, guilt and damnation – who’d say no to that?

Micah: I like the first Kung Fu Panda movie. During my dark time, I watched it on repeat. Nothing like getting life advice from a bunch of talking animals.

What are you passionate about & why is this so important to you?

Lempuyang is built on perspective.

Markus: Perspectives. I love discovering new perspectives on anything, because it enriches my understanding of the world and my place in it.

Micah: Plants, among many other things. Working with plants is like therapy. Everyone should care for a plant to experience the uplift that comes with it.

What is your favorite time of day and why?

Markus: Early morning. Calm, and full of space.

Micah: Snacktime, because, hello, snacks.

What is your favorite smell and why?

Markus: Freshness after rain, the dead of night and a dusty road – makes me feel alive.

Micah: Lemon after zesting and parmesan after grating. You just know you are going to have something good.

Why did you start blogging?

Markus + Micah: It always seemed like a fun thing to do and thanks to the pandemic we finally did it!

Even Markus thinks so.

What is your favorite piece of clothing and why?

Markus: Wool socks. The epitome of comfort and coziness.

Micah: My shark onesie. So comfy. I also have matching fluffy shark slippers. Do not envy me.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Markus + Micah: Our answers are still the same as here.

What is your favorite season and why?

Markus + Micah: You can check it out on our previous Liebster Award nomination here.

What is one quality you love about yourself and why?

Markus: I can be very empathetic – which can be exhausting, but is ultimately a force for good, I think.

Micah: I am able to apologize when I am wrong and not bullshit people. I would rather be honest and cause a war than fake peace. Then apologize, obviously.

What advice would you like to give to your younger self?

Markus: Come off it, you.

Micah: Why so serious?

  2. I just adore the two of you and could certainly never get tired of you! Your answers brought a smile to my face and it’s always lots of fun to learn more about you!

    I agree with you Micah about plants! 😉 Everyone should definitely experience the joy and uplifting nature of taking care of a plant (or many plants!) It can be very addictive, learning more about them, what they need, what they like or don’t, etc. Each plant has so much in common with another, yet they are dramatically different too. It’s a lot like us as people if you think about it.

    I also loved this line from you, Markus: “Markus: I can be very empathetic – which can be exhausting, but is ultimately a force for good, I think.” — I’m with you wholeheartedly on this one. It can be exhausting to be feeling so much energy all of the time. Yet, as you say, when we use it to better understand the world around us and bring positive change in the lives of others — it doesn’t get much better than that!

    1. Thank you. Yes, plants are lovely. Do you have some at home, too? And you are right, we all do what we can for ourselves and others, hopefully the energy exchange will be fruitful.       1. My husband and I actually have a certified and inspected plant nursery. It’s only a couple of years old so we are building it up. 😊 Plants are fascinating to work with!

        It has been a little overwhelming lately unfortunately. I needed to take a mental health break. Have you ever had those times in life when the mental fog was so strong you could hardly think straight? It was that kind of feeling. Praying the overwhelm is calming down now!

        1. Wow, really wishing bad to see your plant nursery. Glad you were also able to take a break. Definitely know what you mean. We hope it all settles for you soon, but no rush. There was just a storm here, strong winds. Always a worry with the plants, but everything is okay now, no flood or damage.

    1. Cannot blame you. This noodle shop is gold. It is always packed and a favorite of locals, too. Have you been to Bali already? Do you think pizza is more Italian or American? And it is fine, you can have whatever you want on your pizza. Actually, I find that the simplest ones are the best: basil, cheese, and tomato, for example.

        1. Simple is the best. I have tried to make homemade pizza dough and have reasonable success, but still looking for The One recipe. Any recommendations or? Aha, Bali is magic. Maybe this is where we will meet one day.

    2. Thank you, no murder intentions made. The noodles are amazing. You really taste the quality, how no shortcuts were taken. We always have it despite the boiling Bali heat. And you will tell your younger self not to laugh at everything? How come?

      1. Thank god. Oh yeah, cool! Well uh I laugh a lot and even in moments that are completely normal, I start laughing and smiling and sometimes I used to get into trouble, I’d laugh. Yeah, it was messed up.

  8. I agree with both of your pieces of advice for your younger selves. If only I’d realized back then how much better life would be by not taking myself so seriously. Fortunately I’ve caught on. Also, you have the right answer about pineapple on your pizza. ‘Tis delicious.

    1. I wonder why there is so much hate on pineapple on pizza? It is pizza, you can put whatever you want. Add salted egg or hummus if it pleases you, right? And I agree, it is ridiculous how grave we can sometimes be, especially as young people! I suppose it is because there is so much pressure on “doing the right thing” growing up and nobody really tells us to explore and enjoy and play with life, which is a shame.

    1. Thank you. It was taken in Lempuyang Temple in Bali. Quite the popular tourist spot. We were never interested in going, particularly because of the one to two hour photo line and 4 AM wake up call for the long drive, but had to go when my sisters visited us in Bali. I had to return a second time one year later when my best friend visited. The things we do for love.

          1. Should be back to normal but the government here is overly cautious. The beach has been closed for 2 months! Despite such low community infection rates — sometimes it’s zero. There’s a few restrictions on meet ups in terms of numbers and everyone wears a mask (since January!) but otherwise all is well I suppose:)

            1. Same, incredibly conservative here, too. It breaks my heart because this can be managed differently and people can still live while lowering their risks. But no, the answer of local municipalities is to just lock everything. Is Disney World open?

              1. IN fairness to the govt. here there hasn’t been a proper lock down like other places. I think Disney world is open…ocean park as well. So people are not that inconvenienced in reality

          1. Well, that’s US streaming. So you still have excuses. I only learned of it when someone on a talk show mentioned it and the host gushed about it too. I looked it up and finally watched it much later. It really sticks with you. If it was free anywhere, I’d be watching it now.

              1. I don’t know. I used to say It’s A Wonderful Life but now I’m too jaded. It’s more likely Top Hat, Bringing Up Baby (both from the 30s) or SUCK, a comedy vampire film. I watch Return To Me virtually every times it’s on tv, which is a LOT (2 times today; about 5 this week) it changes a lot but in my book it’s really hard to beat 30s/40s slapstick comedy!

                1. I have not heard of any of these movies, except RHPS, but I also have not watched it. I am so uneducated when it comes to movies. It is just that I find it hard to get interested because movies are kind of long.

                  1. The 30s slapsticks and musicals are fast paced and usually only 90min.

                    RHPS is horrible without a shadow cast and interactive audience. I started going around 1980 and between the audience callouts and my laughing it took 3x before I heard a word of dialog!

                    2. Shadow cast is when people perform the movie in front of the screen… always at the midnight showings.

                      Interactivity: there were tons of call backs… such as when a character says, “you see…” the audience would yell, “LA!!” (UCLA)

                      There were also water guns, toast, lighters, TONS of uncooked rice, playing cards,….

                      I used to come home with so much rice in my clothes that my mother made me get undressed in the back yard. And the theater’s bathroom stalls had signs that said, “please do not dump rice in toikets” which must have really confused people going there for regular movies!!!

                      The only other movie I know of that got that way was The Room (“the best worst movie ever”). It really is horrible!!! There was a bit of shadow cast performance (mainly nerf football tossing), lots of yelling lines at the screen, and throwing ungodly amounts of spoons. The one time I saw it, the midnight show sold out 5 theaters. The writer/director/ “star” was there and answered QA for way too long (he’s literally nuts). Thank gobs I had randomly picked theater 1 because I can’t imagine how late it was by the time he finishef QA in theater 5 and the movie could start.

              2. I just checked my Amazon purchases (I own very few movies). Gotta add LA Story, cause it’s humor about LA is perfect. And The Wall .. both the original movie and the Roger Waters concert film. Also My Man Godfrey and Gay Divorcee (which is nearly identical plot to Top Hat but has better songs & dances).

                I’ve seen Rocky Horror Picture Show well over 200 times but it’s only good with a shadow cast (I was in one) and with call backs.

        1. Good to hear. Continue recovering! I agree, and I actually often wonder how many deaths happened this time because people did not get to the hospital in time or because of new protocols in ERs due to the pandemic. Crazy.

    1. Wow, five? I have two! One is a normal classic paperback while the other has this gorgeous pink cover that is every bit lovely. I saw it at the bookstore but I stopped myself from buying it because it was expensive and I already have a copy. Then, I got it as a present. That was nice. Do you mean the original animated movie or the Tim Burton remake?

      1. The original Disney version. I don’t like the Tim Burton version. I have a 1940 vintage version, two classic versions, a pop up version and a very expensive illustrated version that I also got as a gift. I collect books and have nearly 3 000.

            1. Such a generous thought, thank you. I just also enjoy books and feel really happy when I receive one from the mail. I used to have an old blog from a lifetime ago and blog friends and I would send each other books, too. It was really fun.

    1. Thank you. I enjoyed the first one the most out of the three. It was simply made. I cannot count how many times I watched that movie. In the next two, the animation improved but the message of the first was stronger, or at least it resonated more with me. Who is your favorite character in the movies?

        1. Yes, I can particularly remember frames from the third movie and those were works of art. Of course, Oogway is awesome. He seems always high! I wish we are all able to see life the same way he does. Every day would be easier, no?

    1. Maybe I eat too much when it rains that I cannot focus on the smell. Haha! Yes, I like being straightforward and dealing with problems, no matter how messy it becomes. Markus is the same so we get along well. We have zero interest in anything less than genuine. Life is too short for that, no?

        1. Besides, there are much more genuine people out there, or at least those that we would genuinely appreciate. I think it is fine if some people do not connect with us or we do not connect with other people. That is just normal.

          1. True. Like my husband, he has friends who do not like me (not as his wife- but as a separate entity) — they didn’t like me even before I am connected to my husband…

            Same with some of my friends toward my husband.

            WE DO HAVE A SMALL WORLD.

            It’s ok. It’s not mandatory that we will be liked by all… we can live with the few real ones…

            What is important is we connect with those whom we like…

  23. i am terribly afraid of being wrong on the internet and i always check fact check and cross reference before posting anything to the point of obsession haha!
    On twitter someone asked people to post the horror books that made them cry and someone replied with a math textbook … so yeah its a thing haha

      1. it would be difficult to narrow down a specific book as my favourite horror but I am a big fan of Stephen King and Dean Kontz and have binge read everything they ever written… oh and also Goosebumps have a special place…

        1. Seems like you really enjoy the genre! I think I have only read two books from Stephen King. The horror one I already forgot the title but it was not any of the popular ones. The other book is On Writing, which I really liked.

            1. There was a time in my life when all I did was read. I would finish one book every three days. My favorites then were classics and historical fiction. These days, I do not read as much, but when I do, I pick up philosophy, history, or strategy books. The last book I read was Figuring by Maria Popova.

        1. Fair enough. It does take time to complete, which is why we are always weeks behind! But as with anything, we try to let our answers flow and get to these posts when inspiration is present. We love the community it creates.
